Most people use modern gadgets as lifestyle products, primarily for tasks like tracking fitness or checking notifications. But these gadgets can also save lives. Apple's Ultra Watch saved Mumbai resident Kshitij Jodape's life in the ocean. While scuba diving, when he suddenly began to rise rapidly, the Apple Watch's siren feature activated, and Kshitij's instructor became aware of the situation and immediately rushed to help. Kshitij emailed Apple about the incident. Apple CEO Tim Cook responded to Kshitij's email, thanking him for highlighting the importance of the siren feature.
Since Kshitij's life-saving incident came to light, the Apple Watch's siren feature has been in the news. This feature is only available in Apple's Ultra series. It automatically activates in certain circumstances, such as a rapid change in altitude or diving, as happened in Kshitij's case.
It emits a very loud sound of 86 decibels (dB), which can be heard up to 600 feet (180 meters). This sound is not like a regular alarm, but rather sounds like an SOS signal or distress call, so anyone can easily understand that help is needed. It continues to sound for hours, until the battery runs out. Once this feature is activated, the watch continuously emits a loud sound in two different patterns. A red border appears on the watch screen, and if necessary, an emergency call can be made directly.
How to activate?
Activating the siren is very easy, and there are several ways. Pressing and holding the action button (orange button) activates it as soon as the countdown is complete. Alternatively, you can activate it by opening the Siren app on the watch and touching the Play button. It can also be activated by saying "Start the Siren" or "Start the Siren" to Siri. It automatically sounds under certain circumstances.
How did Kshitij's life get saved?
Kshitij Jodape, a 26-year-old tech expert from Mumbai, was scuba diving near Puducherry. He was about 36 meters deep when his weight belt suddenly came loose, completely losing control of his diving and causing him to rapidly tumble upward. Kshitij was unable to control himself. When the Apple Watch Ultra noticed that the Ascent speed was at a dangerous level, it first warned the user, Kshitij. When Kshitij did not respond to the watch's warning, it activated its high-pitched siren.
The Apple Watch Ultra was so loud that instructors nearby were immediately alerted and rushed to his aid. Kshitij was then rescued. If the Apple Watch's siren hadn't been activated, he would have been at risk of lung over-expansion due to the rapid ascent, which could have proved fatal.
