Mamata Banerjee says, 'tainted' teachers may be employed in non-teaching roles

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday announced that alternative job arrangements will be made for the “tainted” teachers in state-run schools who have become “ineligible” .

While addressing a programme on the occasion of the Teachers’ Day, observed a day ahead, Banerjee said, “In 2016 almost 17,297 teachers were employed in Class X and XII posts and circumventing a lot of legal difficulties, 9,700 posts were finalised in 2025 April. We still have many vacancies. We cannot do many things but for that I won't blame the court.”

“ I am trying to seek out a solution for those who have been teaching for years now but are "ineligible"now. We are taking a legal opinion on such candidates. They will not be able to become teachers in the future. But we will try so that they can at least be accommodated as Group-C non-teaching staff in the state-run schools. We will look at the matter with a humanitarian aspect,” Banerjee said as she was talking about the “tainted and “ineligible” ones.

“Following the actions of a few people, so many have had to suffer, and they lost their jobs. The process for untainted candidates has already started. We have given priority to teachers with 10-12 years of experience. We intend to do whatever we can do to help,” she said.

Banerjee said for Group C and D employees, she will try to find a solution, after the teachers' employment is completed.

The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) has recently come out with a list of 1,806 “tainted” candidates last week.

According to her, the process has started for the recruitment of those who are found to be “untainted” and hence, “eligible”. “Anyone can apply regardless of their age. We have given them an age relaxation, and those who are eligible can return by passing the fresh recruitment examination. The recruitment process will be completed in two or three months. After that, the process for Groups C and D non-teaching staff will start. Those who have served for 10-12 years and have crossed their age will also be considered,” she added.

“Some people move the court and get a stay on a recruitment. I do not feel happy when the school teachers lose their jobs,” she added.
