Prince Harry is set to see his father, King Charles, for the first time in 20 months when he returns to the UK in two weeks. The Duke of Sussex is due to return to Britain for the WellChild Awards in September - and we want to know whether you think he should bring Meghan Markle with him.
While Prince William has 'out of hand' rejected any reconciliation with his brother, Harry and Charles are expected to meet during the estranged prince's visit to London on September 8 - the third anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's death. The reunion comes after an informal peace summit with Buckingham Palace officials earlier this summer.
The King and the Duke have not seen each other since January last year, since which Charles has been undergoing treatment for cancer. Harry's visit also marks his first time in the UK since his failed appeal against the downgrading of his security protection.
A US source said: “It’s clear there is now a determination on both sides to make this happen. Nobody is pretending the wider family issues have been resolved, but this is about beginning with Charles and Harry.
"For the first time in a long time, there’s a genuine sense that reconciliation is within reach. Prince Harry’s team and the Palace have opened a line of communication, and there is every hope that father and son will see one another when the Duke returns to London in September."
They continued: “After 20 months apart, and with the King continuing his treatment, the feeling is that the time is right to take that step. This is not about grand gestures or set-piece meetings - it’s about a simple face-to-face conversation between a father and his son. The priority is privacy and dignity, but also ensuring the door stays open for further dialogue. As for Harry and William, though, any chance of reconciliation between them has been rejected out of hand.”
Meghan Markle is not expected to join her husband on the overseas trip, instead maintaining her distance from Britain to stay in the US with their children, Archie and Lilibet. The Duchess of Sussex has not been in the UK since September 2022, when she visited a charity event with Prince Harry.
In February, one Royal expert revealed that Meghan 'isn't likely to return to the UK anytime soon'. Arthur Edwards - long-time photographer of the royals - told The Sun's Royal Exclusive show that it would be a seriously "big moment" for her to return, and one that would leave him "surprised".
"Whether she ever comes to this country again," Arthur said, "That would be the big moment when, when you tell me that Meghan's coming to England, then I'll be surprised, because she managed to avoid it."
The expert also said "Meghan does it her way, and Harry seems to fall in with that, and that's how it's going to be, I think, until there's a complete change of heart. I mean, it's up to him, and whether Meghan could ever come back here I don't know."
The Duchess of Sussex and their children, Archie, six, and Lilibet, four, made the decision to stay in the States after the prince previously said he 'can’t see a world' in which he could bring his children to Britain without proper security protection.
