PM Modi's reaction has come for the first time after the changes in GST. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the major reforms approved by the GST Council. He called it the 'biggest decision after independence'.
During a program in Delhi, the Prime Minister said that GST has become even simpler now, he called it a 'double dhamaka' before Diwali.
The Prime Minister said, "Now GST has become even simpler. Only two slabs are left, 5% and 18%, which has made it easier for every citizen and businessman." He further said that this new system called GST 2.0 will provide relief to households, small traders and industries, everyone.
PM Modi lashed out at the opposition
The PM further said - 'In the previous governments, a large amount of tax was levied on goods. Before I came in 2014, be it kitchen items, agricultural goods or medicines, even life insurance, the Congress government used to levy different taxes on many such things. If it was the same era, today if you bought something worth Rs 100, you would have to pay Rs 20-25 tax, but the aim of our government is to maximize savings in the lives of common people, to make people's lives better.'
The GST Council has abolished the 12% and 28% slabs, and has kept the rates at only 5% and 18%. These changes will come into effect from September 22. This is one of the biggest changes since the implementation of GST in 2017.
Items that were earlier in the higher tax slabs will now mostly come in the 5% and 18% slabs. This will make essential items, personal care items, restaurant food, travel, gadgets and even vehicles cheaper.
PM Modi said during this time that the youth of the country will benefit from the changes in the field of fitness. He said, 'Gym, salon, yoga...tax has been reduced on these services, which means our youth will be fit and hit too.'
