Australia's cricket team is facing a significant challenge as their star bowler and captain, Pat Cummins, is unlikely to participate in the first Test of the upcoming Ashes series. Cummins, who is suffering from a back injury, is still undergoing rehabilitation, and recent scans have shown only partial improvement, raising concerns about his full recovery before the series begins.
The Ashes series, scheduled to start in the last week of November in Perth, will see Australia and England compete across five Tests, with the final match in Sydney in early January 2026. If Cummins does not recover in time, it could impact Australia's strategies and leadership, as he is also the team captain.
Sources indicate that Cummins' return to international cricket could be delayed until December, which means he might miss not only the opening Test but several other matches in the series. In his absence, Steve Smith could take over captaincy, having been announced as Australia's captain for the Sri Lanka tour and being the natural choice for leadership given his experience in 40 Tests.
Additionally, the team will need to find a replacement bowler to fill Cummins’ role alongside Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. The leading candidate might be Scott Boland, but the final decision has yet to be announced, and the uncertainty looms over Australia's chances in the series.
