In a shocking claim, former Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said that Islamabad does not know where Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar is. He has also said that the country would be happy to arrest him if India reveals that he is on Pakistani soil.
Masood Azhar is one of India's most wanted terrorists. He is one of the conspirators of the 2001 Parliament attack, the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, the 2016 Pathankot attack, and the 2019 Pulwama attack, among others. Azhar was declared a global terrorist by the United Nations in 2019. He was released in exchange for the passengers of IC-814 after the Kandahar hijacking in 1999.
India has been demanding that Pakistan hand over Azhar and Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed so that they can be punished for their nefarious deeds. India has provided Islamabad with evidence of the two being active there several times, but Pakistan has turned a blind eye each time.
'Hafiz Saeed is not a free man in Pakistan'
In an interview with a news portal, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chief Bilawal Bhutto (who is part of the ruling coalition in the country) said Hafiz Saeed is not a free man in Pakistan, and Azhar may be in Afghanistan.
'If he is on Pakistani soil, we will be very happy to arrest him'
Asked about a report that Saeed is free, Bhutto said, "It is not correct. It is not factually correct that Hafiz Saeed is free. He is in the custody of the Pakistani state. As far as Masood Azhar is concerned, we have been unable to arrest or identify him. Given his past in the Afghan jihad, we believe he is in Afghanistan." If and when the Indian government shares with us information that he is on Pakistani soil, we will be very happy to arrest him.'
Why expect information from India?
When asked why Pakistan would expect or wait for information from India about Azhar, the PPP chief said in an evasive tone, "When you cooperate with any country on counter-terrorism, we share our concern, they share their concern. That is how we were able to foil attacks in London, we were able to foil attacks in New York, we were able to foil attacks in Pakistan."
'No reason to want to see any dangerous person active'
He said that as far as Masood Azhar is concerned, if he is in Afghanistan, the West has now handed him over to a group which they once called terrorists, and now they call the people in charge of Afghanistan terrorists. Pakistan can't go and do what NATO was unable to do in Afghanistan. There is no reason for Pakistan to want this man or any dangerous person active.
The Jaish-e-Mohammed headquarters in Bahawalpur were targeted.
Bhutto's comment is important given India's response in the form of Operation Sindoor on May 7 after the April 22 Pahalgam attack. India targeted major terrorist bases in Pakistan during the operation, including the Lashkar-e-Taiba headquarters in Muridke and the Jaish-e-Mohammed headquarters in Bahawalpur. Azhar had said that 10 members of his family and four of his associates were killed during India's attacks.
Has also threatened the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty
The PPP chief has also threatened the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty by India. He had threatened that if water is not given to Pakistan, it will go to war. He had said, 'Indus is ours and will remain ours, either our water will flow in it or their blood.'
India had given a befitting reply.
Union Minister Hardeep Puri had replied that such statements should not be considered dignified. Tell him to jump into the water somewhere. Well, how will he jump when there is no water?
