Beans on toast is a lot tastier if you make just 1 simple ingredient swap

Recipe creator Brian Watson, also known as Thee Burger Dude, has revealed his one simple swap to make beans on toast taste even better. Instead of adding more ingredients (but, of course, that's still an option too), it's a straightforward substitute that can make the biggest difference.

If you're still using "plain white bread", then this classic dish might result in a "soggy" meal. Thee Burger Dude noted: "I found that using plain white bread resulted in soggy bread, no matter how much I toasted it." His advice is to swap white bread with sourdough for a more satisfying bite - although, toasting the bread might be out of the question (in the conventional way).

Instead, you could heat up a frying pan with a little bit of oil and toast the sourdough bread that way.

Plus, you're likely to feel more full if you have wholegrain sourdough bread and beans, rather than a white slice with beans.

This is because white bread is "likely to cause large blood sugar spikes" that will soon make you feel hungry again, the scientists at team ZOE pointed out.

To elaborate, any whole grain bread will cause a gradual rise and fall in blood sugar, meaning you will feel fuller for longer.

Seasoning

While seasoning is totally optional when it comes to beans on toast, there might be a few spices you might not have thought about.

Salt and black pepper are the usual go-to, but Thee Burger Dude has a much wider palate.

"I suggest using a bunch of seasonings to see what you like," he stated, before adding his own suggestions.

Some of his top ones were Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, smoked paprika, and even curry powder.

To add cheese or not?

Some wouldn't dare think of beans and cheese without a sprinkling of cheese on top.

But are all cheeses created equal when it comes to being a topping for baked beans on toast?

Surely the only reasonable suggestion would be mature cheddar cheese as it melts gorgeously with the beans?

Alternative options could, however, include Red Leicester, Gruyère or Monterey Jack cheese.
