The UK is famous for its incredible market towns. There are many that are worth considering for a visit and they are scattered all over Britain. And for anyone interested in exploring Norfolk, there is one town in particular that amazes people. It is full of independent shops, hidden yards, and narrow streets.
Many people who visited said it looks like it's frozen in time. One visitor wrote: "It's like travelling back in time and every building is beautiful." Another said: "The whole town just has this magical, old-school atmosphere. I didn't want to leave." A third added: "You could spend hours exploring the little shops and yards. It's one of the nicest towns I've ever been to."
The place in question is Holt. Holt is a historic Georgian market town in north Norfolk surrounded by countryside and just a short drive from the coast.
It is known for its pretty flint stone buildings, hidden courtyards, and wide range of independent shops.
There are bakeries, galleries, boutiques and antique stores, along with cosy cafes, tearooms and pubs.
Unlike many places, chain stores are rare there, which gives the town its unique feel.
Two popular spots in the centre are Bakers & Larners - a department store often compared to a mini Fortnum and Mason - and Byfords café and deli.
But the real charm lies in the yards. These include Lees Yard, Chapel Yard, Hoppers Yard and Appleyard, each filled with small shops and hidden gems.
Much of Holt's look today comes from a fire in 1708, which destroyed most of the original town.
It was rebuilt in the 18th century, giving it the Georgian layout and buildings it's now famous for.
To explore the town's history, visitors can follow the Holt Owl Trail, which is a 45-minute circular walk guided by owl plaques on the pavement.
It passes key landmarks like the town's war memorial, St Andrew's Church, and spots linked to local legends such as the Holt Owl.
Just outside the town is Holt Country Park, which is a 100-acre woodland with picnic areas, nature trails, and a playground.
It's ideal for a family day out and has year-round events. Nearby, the Poppy Line heritage railway runs steam and diesel services to Sheringham and Weybourne.
Also close by are Baconsthorpe Castle, a ruined moated manor house, and Letheringsett Watermill - Norfolk's only working watermill still producing flour from local grain.
Holt is popular all year round. From April to December, it hosts a monthly Sunday Market displaying local food, crafts, and street traders.
What's more, during the Christmas season, the high street comes alive with amazing decorations and festive markets.
