Belgium closed its airspace after drone sightings on Tuesday evening, sparking travel chaos at major airports, including the capital Brussels. Drone sightings were also reported over military bases in Belgium, according to local media.
Air traffic at Brussels Airport was suspended as a security measure following the sighting shortly before 8pm local time (7pm GMT), as confirmed by Belgian air traffic control authority Skeyes. Spokesperson Kurt Verwilligen said: "As a precaution, all air traffic was temporarily suspended."
At first, flights were diverted to Liège Airport, one hour southwest of Brussels, but this airport also had to close its airspace after drone sightings. "All Belgian airspace is closed," announced Liège Airport spokesperson Christian Delcourt.
