NEW DELHI: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday appointed its national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee as the party’s leader in the Lok Sabha , party sources said.
Banerjee, a three-time MP from Diamond Harbour, will replace veteran Kolkata Uttar MP Sudip Bandopadhyay , who has been relieved of the responsibility due to health reasons, they added.
The decision was taken during a virtual meeting of TMC MPs chaired by party chief and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee . Lawmakers from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha attended the meeting.
Abhishek Banerjee is also the nephew of Mamata Banerjee.
The TMC currently holds 29 seats in the Lok Sabha and is a key constituent of the opposition INDIA bloc .
