NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the first of the new Common Central Secretariat buildings along Kartavya Path on Wednesday. The building, named Kartavya Bhawan-3 , is part of the Central Vista redevelopment project and will house several key central government ministries and departments.
The video of the new building and preparations for the inauguration has been shared online ahead of the event.
Apart from the departments of personnel and land resources, the new facility will accommodate several other critical departments including home affairs, petroleum and natural gas, external affairs, and rural development. This marks a significant shift, especially for the home ministry and the personnel department, which have operated from the iconic North Block at Raisina Hills for nearly 90 years.
Over the next few months, the finance ministry is also expected to move from North Block to another Kartavya Bhawan. At a later stage, the defence ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) will also shift from South Block, clearing space for the upcoming Yuge Yugeen Bharat museum.
As part of the larger Central Vista plan, the government has proposed 10 Kartavya Bhawans along the stretch. Two additional buildings are expected to be completed by next month, allowing for further relocation of ministries and departments.
According to the PMO, Kartavya Bhawan-3 spans approximately 1.5 lakh square metres, with two basement levels and seven floors. It includes energy-saving features, such as rooftop solar panels capable of generating over 5.3 lakh units of electricity annually and charging stations for electric vehicles. The facility is designed to be IT-enabled, with ID card-based access, integrated surveillance and a centralised command system.
